¿Pregnancy with precum? Here the scientific answer

Can I stay pregnant with precum? This is the question that millions of women do .............. and few scientists.

In the entire history of medicine since 1950 only there have been about 15 scientific studies. The earliest studies did not demonstrate the existence of spermatozoa in the seminal fluidand thus suggest that there is no risk of pregnancy if this fluid falls below the neck of the female uterus.

In 1992 two studies appear: one does not find sperm in the fluid preseminal any of the men surveyed and the other group is a few sperm in 8 of the 23 men tested.

liquid-preseminal

In 2003, Zuckerman's team investigated microscopically pre-cum five patients referred for premature ejaculation, three with excess precum and four normal healthy volunteers. They found a single sperm or in any of the liquids 12 preseminales men. Zuckerman said then that there was definitely review the concept of alert to the presence of seminal fluid during uncontrolled relationships and stop alarm about the potential risk of pregnancy.

However, in 2011, another group of researchers led by Killick, demonstrating the presence of sperm in the seminal fluid .

Their study was designed to determine whether motile sperm are released with precum and if this fluid thus represents a risk for unintended pregnancy. Seminal fluid of 27 men was examined. Eleven of the 27 men (41%) produced seminal fluid containing sperm and in 37% of cases were motile sperm.

The reason why this study could demonstrate the presence of motile sperm in the seminal fluid, could be because it was in the vicinity of a unit of IVF where the samples were examined in less than two minutes.

Some experts argued that any sperm present in the seminal fluid actually came from previous ejaculations and therefore could avoid the risk of pregnancy if men urinate before sex. However, Killick debunks these arguments as in the study of Killick, the presence of sperm even though the volunteers had urinated was demonstrated.

The study in question is this:

. Sperm content of pre-ejaculatory fluid  Human Fertility ( . Camb)  2011 March;  14 (1) : 48-52.

How much precum that has fertilizing capacity to produce a pregnancy?

In the study of Killick, sperm were but few. Only one of the 27 men held more than 23 million sperm in their seminal fluid and most did not even 1 million sperm in the seminal fluid.

Is it enough to 1 million sperm?

Keep in mind that only 2.5% of couples with fertility problems achieve a pregnancy when man has such low sperm numbers, and not in his precum but throughout the ejaculate. Therefore, one might think that 1 million sperm pregnancy will produce only 2.5% of cases.

We may assume that the probability of pregnancy with precum would, at best, the product of the probability of presence of sperm in the seminal fluid (41% of cases or 0.41) for the probability of pregnancy  with a concentration of around one million total sperm in pre-ejaculate  (2.5% of pregnancies or 0.025). That gives an estimated 1% risk of pregnancy at most half full.

But eye !!, that 1% risk of pregnancy with precum would be if women were ovulating at that time. If the woman is not ovulating, the probability is lower. To find the probability of ovulation at a certain point in the cycle you should consult this table: probability of pregnancy on different days of the menstrual cycle .

Finally, a study published in 2012, in which the presence of sperm was explored in the vagina of women after sex, found that 14% of those who reported not having  had intravaginal ejaculation however, a significant number of sperm in the vagina. How did they get there?

If you surf the internet forums we can find many stories of women who became pregnant as well:

"I got pregnant in this way, our daughter is now 5 years and know with certainty that it was for the pre-ejaculate because I had been very badly and just try to have intercourse once that month, I was so sick that I told my husband to stop after a couple of minutes and I was pregnant so yes you can get pregnant this way "

"I got pregnant this way! It has a lot over time, if a guy does not come in time some sperm pass to you without him knowing. We have to be very careful using the method of reverse. I've used 100 times and I finally got pregnant ... "

Unfortunately, we have little scientific study, the percentages may vary and probability could be more or it could be less. There is also great variation in the amount of precum that men produce. Some men do not produce pre-cum at all, while others may secrete up to 5 ml. With more studies and larger sample would achieve a more precise and accurate calculation of the potential for   pregnancy with precum . What is true is that this liquid is rich in bacteria and capable of transmitting diseases such as chlamydia, trichomonas or AIDS so the risks are many, including as we have seen, the pregnancy.

Many men are not able to distinguish the end of issue of precum

The study of Killic served to highlight a fact key to understanding many pregnancies: Although the study volunteers were carefully instructed in the need to collect a sample of fluid before ejaculation, some of them were not able to do it and took samples liquid could be considered as ejaculatory The fact that some men may be unable to judge the moment when ejaculation begins, creates a risk of unwanted pregnancy very clear.
